Cycling performance workshop

There will be a cycling performance workshop on Monday, July 19 from 7:00 – 8:00pm at the Central High School cellar. The cellar is located near the front main entrance of the school. Take the stairs to your left down to the lower level and enter through the doors. The cellar will be on your left.

The workshop is intended to be a free discussion led by Parkland Cyclists President Kurt Glore. The discussion will cover what to do before, during and after your ride to get the most out of the experience. Kurt will go into what he does to prepare for a casual ride, training ride and race. The discussion will include what to eat, when to eat, what to drink and how much, what stretches to do and how to handle the post ride routine. The information comes from many print and web sources as well as professionals who have passed the information along since Kurt started racing competitively.

This workshop is intended to help cyclists at all levels get the most out of their rides. If you would like to attend please RSVP as seating is limited.

If you have any questions please send us an email.

ON TRACK

If  you’ve been using your healthy strategies to manage your weight and good health thru the winter months – congratulations on your accomplishments so far!  You may have noticed that temptation is starting to decrease and your confidence is starting to increase. At this point it should be easier to make healthy choices. You can see that the word “deprivation” is not about giving up late night eating and sweets. You can see that “deprivation” is simply not giving yourself a healthy lifestyle that will lead to well-being.  If you haven’t held faithful to your New Year Resolution for better health you might have already given in to temptation. If so, it’s never too late to get back on track.  I encourage you not to lose sight of your success! The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary. It takes a little sweat and sacrifice to get what you want. Continue to think of yourself as a person who is committed to changing ( little steps at a time) and celebrate the successes that you have had! You can overcome this slip.  If you can view your temptations and setbacks as learning opportunities rather than reasons for giving up your efforts you can manage your weight more effectively and move into better health. You know you are “recycling” if you are progressively learning from your setbacks and moving forward. It doesn’t do any good to get defensive or discouraged about your slips. Having a setback is a normal part of the change process. Celebrate the fact that you have taken action, figure out what went wrong, and learn from the experience.

The Power of a Positive Attitude

In this life, attitude is almost everything!  The big question for many of us, then, is how to keep a positive attitude in everything we do.  Positive thinking leads to positive attitude. Someone once said to me “don’t worry that your kids are listening to you, worry that they are watching you.”  How true that is. Positive feelings are the key to having that positive attitude at home or in the workplace.  You can’t be your best without the positive feelings about what it is you are actually doing.  This may require the “fake it to you make it” action.  Did you know that the way you think, day in day out, affects all aspects of your life? Learning to listen to your “self talk” will help you recognize your thought patterns and how they may be affecting the way you handle the stressful situations of daily living.

EAT TO RIDE

Ready. Set. Ride! Some tips you may find useful before getting out on the
road this spring.

Tip #1 Eat a more plant-based diet, and really look at your food before you
eat it. Can you recognize it as an animal, plant or something that came from
a plant? Choose that over anything that comes in a package or is filled with
mystery ingredients you can’t pronounce.

Tip #2 Too many cyclists don’t take the intensity and length of their rides
into consideration when they eat postworkout. They tend to overeat by at
least twice as many calories than they actually burned during exercise. Eat
during your ride. If your ride is long and hard, have a snack that is a mix
of protein and carbohydrate right after you finish. Then have a regular meal
later. If your ride is an hour or less, you are likely fueled by the meal
you ate beforehand, so you don’t need extra energy.
